Why are they called "Dumbbells"?

While various tools have been used for thousands of years to increase muscle strength, size, endurance and power, the name "dumbell" was officially coined in England in the sixteenth century.

Athletes trained with handheld bells with the clappers removed. Without these clappers, the bells were 'dumb' (aka silent) hence, dubbed “dumbbells”. ... Eventually, the literal "dumb" bells were replaced with iron weights.

Over the years, the shape and style of dumbbells has changed, but the purpose, effectiveness, and name has remained the same!
